EL QUIZ 2009/10

P1 & P2 EL Quiz Assembly
Written by Ms Cindy Fox

On 10 November 2009, the P1 and P2 students participated in the annual English Quiz.  Two members from each class were selected to display their knowledge of Fairy Tales in the EL quiz styled after a game show.  The Red Team, which consisted of students from P1G and P2F, were the champions of the first round.  The second round of the quiz was open to the entire audience.  Students who answered the questions correctly were rewarded with a prize.  The quiz assembly was quite a success and the students enjoyed it immensely. We look forward to the next English Quiz!

P3 & P4 EL Quiz Assembly
Written by Ms Serene Leong

The recent P3 and P4 English Jeopardy Quiz was such a fun-filled event that we left our students chanting for more. The “million-dollar” question, “He wrote the popular children’s series My Weird School Daze, where…. Who is he?” set our contestants waging a huge chunk of their score to vie for the first prize in the Interclass Jeopardy Quiz on 12 November 2009.  This year, more students were able to have a go at playing ‘Jeopardy’ because we introduced the Audience Quiz on 19 November 2009. Pupils were picked randomly through lots to answer questions. This gave even the shy pupils an opportunity to play and win. Stay tuned for our next English Jeopardy Quiz in Term 4!

P5 & P6 EL Quiz Assembly
Written by Mr Matthew Grey

This year’s P5 and P6 English Blockbuster quizzes were keenly contested again this year. All contestants acquitted themselves well and identified and spelt lots of words from given definitions. After some very competitive rounds, 6C and 6L were declared joint Blockbusters champions of the P6 competition. 5H won the equivalent competition for P5 students. 5H was then narrowly defeated by a team of teachers in the “Champions’ Play-Off”. Perhaps next time, the “Champions of Champions” crown will be worn by a team of triumphant P5 or P6 students. We shall find out when competition resumes later in the year.

HEIFER READ TO FEED PROGRAMME (18 SEPT 2009 – 15 OCT 2009)

The Heifer Read to Feed Programme is part of SIS English and Chinese departments’ extensive reading programme. It is a collaboration with Heifer International, a non-profit organisation dedicated to ending world hunger by providing livestock and training to help impoverished families around the world become self-reliant.

Through this programme, we hope to encourage students to read books of different genres and introduce them to issues such as hunger and poverty. Students read to get pledges from family and friends for the books read. Sponsorship can also be on a lump-sum basis rather than a per-book basis. For the 2009/10 Academic Year, the donations are designated for the Anhui Dabie Mountain Area Community Development Project. Through the project, Heifer hopes to:

  • Provide animals, as well as training in animal husbandry, community development, and disaster resistance to help raise their productivity and standard of living.
  • Work with partners to provide training to local villagers and teachers to improve the education level of the communities.
  • Work with local authorities to help the villagers build methane gas wells, rubbish bins and compost sheds in order to improve the living environment.
  • Assist villagers to set up Self-Help Groups in order to bring the community together and motivate them to work towards sustainable development and self-reliance.

We hope to encourage our P1 and P2 students to read 15 English and 15 Chinese books; P3 and P4 students to read 10 English and 10 Chinese books; and P5 and P6 students to read 5 English and 5 Chinese books. Students have to record the titles, authors, and write short reviews for the books that they have read. They are also required to submit at least 2 reading activities to share with their friends. Exceptional work will be displayed during the Open House in April 2010.

Last year, the school raised HK$78 674 and it has helped victim families regain their livelihood by providing them with livestock such as pigs, goats, chickens and rabbits as well as training on animal husbandry. Parents can support the Heifer Read to Feed Programme by encouraging your child to read at home and sponsoring him/her for each book read. Please make your donation by enclosing a crossed cheque made payable to Heifer International Hong Kong Limited with your child’s name and class, and Heifer Read to Feed written on the reverse side of the cheque. All cheques should be dropped into the respective mailboxes at P6 Level by 15 Oct 2009.

BOOK STUDY PROGRAMME 2009/10

The Book Study Programme allows students to read storybooks more closely and hone their critical thinking skills through focusing on the plot, themes and characterisation. Activities range from designing a cover page, summarising different chapters, discussing the different characters to exploring the various themes in the novels such as love, war and friendship.  Students learn to do close reading of the text, focus on language used and find evidence from the novel to support their answers. Through Book Study, we hope that students would cultivate the reading habit, read with a purpose and make connections to their own lives.

Our Book Study Programme commences this term and students will be taking home the book that is used by the class. Each student is responsible for ensuring that the book issued is returned at the end of the year, failing which a payment for book replacement and handling fee would be charged as advised by the SIS library.

Mulan
by Mr Matthew Grey

Have you ever wondered what would happen if the whole of P3 and P4 screamed “frozen chicken” at you? Well, wonder no longer as even evil warlords freeze instantly on the spot when faced with the combined might of two SIS year groups.

On Friday 19th September Chunky Onion Productions rolled into school and brought The Legend of Mulan to life. Most students were familiar with Mulan due to the popular Disney movie of the same name but Chunky Onion enhanced the original tale by including pop music, cellular phones, a fitness instructor and, of course, the frozen chicken spell which helped Mulan defeat the evil Ho Fat.

Great fun was had by all and resounding applause rang out across the auditorium at the end of the show. Later we were treated to a question and answer session with the actors during which a number of P3 and P4 students asked some highly perceptive and thoughtful questions. There is no doubt that all present will remember the experience for a very long time to come. Just be careful if you hear the words “frozen chicken”!

“I laughed out loud when Mulan’s guardian angel did the frozen chicken. It was also hilarious when Mulan’s medicine tasted disgusting and she spat it out. One very dramatic and surprising moment was when Ho Fat stayed with Mulan’s family at the end.”

Winna Tam, P3C

“Mulan is a talented girl. She can defeat Ho Fat by herself. Mulan believes all is lost until she is visited by her guardian angel, Xiao Hua, who teaches her that she can just set her mind to it. Then Mulan decides that she must take her father’s place in order to defeat Ho Fat.”

Jessie Liu Pei Shi, P3L

“My favourite funniest moment was when Papa Fa drank Mulan’s soup and spat it out. The most dramatic moment occurred when Ho Fat chased Mulan around the auditorium with the knife.”

Adam Guo Siming, P3M
