Education and Career Guidance Office and University Counselling Programme

The Education and Career Guidance (ECG) Office and University Counselling (UC) Programme at SISHK aim to build knowledge, nurture skills and develop the mind-set for lifelong learning, and to prepare our students for challenges in an ever-changing world.

The Goals of ECG and UC Programme are to:

  • Build Knowledge - build student capacity in discovering and developing their strengths and interests, understanding the evolving higher education landscape, and anticipating global career trends as they explore viable education and career options.
  • Nurture Skills - empower students with self-directedness, self-awareness, self-management skills, and life skills such as communication, organisation, and responsible decision-making skills.
  • Develop Mindset - inculcate a positive attitude towards various education pathways and an appreciation for the value and contribution of all occupations to society.

Our students can look forward to customised and comprehensive ECG and UC support and guidance from University Counsellors, together with Form Teachers and Diploma Programme (DP) Mentors:

Personal Guidance

  • DP Mentorship Programme: DP students are assigned DP Mentors who provide them with personal guidance on UC matters such as course and university selection and application processes, review of personal statement and application essay, and mock interviews.
  • Form Teachers Interaction Time: Form Teachers regularly engage Secondary 1 to 4 students in one-to-one conversations about their education and career aspirations.
  • University Counsellors: University Counsellors are available via appointment or drop-in sessions from Monday to Friday for personal consultations on any UC or career guidance matters.
  • Online University Guidance Platform: All students have access to an online university guidance platform that complements our ECG/UC lessons, provides information on various higher education institutions and courses, and supports them in managing UC tasks and timeline.

Group / Interest-based

  • Group sessions for students with similar interests: university and career talks and workshops by university admissions teams and speakers from various professions, taster lectures by academics, and UC Seminars on pursuing higher education in various regions around the world are organised throughout the year.
  • External talks and Information Days: information is publicised to students and parents.
  • Alumni sharing sessions: alumni are invited to share their first-hand experience in course selection, university application processes, admissions interviews, college subject tests, and university life.

Cohort and School-wide

  • UC seminars and workshops during Pastoral Care (PC) lessons for S4 to DP2 students: such as ‘Selecting Courses and Higher Education Pathways to Map to Career Aspirations’, ‘How to draft a good personal statement / application essay / supplemental essay’, ‘How to prepare for interviews’, ‘How to prepare my resume and portfolio’, ‘How to prepare for work attachments’, and ‘Life Beyond High School’.
  • ECG lessons for S1 to S3 students: focus on discovering and understanding themselves to identify their interests and strengths, exploring careers and career pathways and developing relevant skills for the future workforce.
  • IGCSE and IBDP subject combination seminars and Q&A sessions: organised for S2 and S4 students.
  • Annual Higher Education Fair: brings together universities admissions teams from around the world to SISHK.
  • Internship Programme: DP students and alumni, as well as eligible S4 students are given the opportunity to go for an internship during the summer break that is matched to their career aspirations.
