Role and Responsibilities

The job scope of the lab technician involves assisting HOD/Science, supporting the Science department and the school in the following areas:

  1. Management of science laboratories
  • Pack and organise the resources in the Science laboratories
  • Label and keep records of all existing and new Science resources and maintain loan records of these resources. Inform HOD if any resource needs to be replenished
  • Keep records of consumables (to replenish when quantity is low).  Monitor and maintain records of substances listed under Schedule 1 or Schedule 2 of the Control of Chemicals Ordinance (if applicable)
  • Liaise with vendors and request for quotations for Science resources
  • Source and make purchases for lab supplies and keep records of the expenditure
  • Monitor and maintain licences, warranties and maintenance contracts as necessary
  • Service and maintain equipment in good condition. Ensure that equipment like Microscopes are serviced once a year and are kept in a ready-to-use condition
  • Conduct audit of the inventory list as required by the Finance Department, at the end of every semester
  •  Ensure proper disposal of waste materials such as sharp waste objects and chemicals
  • Prepare and set up lab resources for teachers’ demonstrations and students’ use during science practical lessons
  • Prepare and set up the materials for Science Practical Assessments and Project Works
  • Set up lab resources for science enrichment activities, g. post-exam activities and during the Summer Programme
  • Ensure adherence to safe laboratory practices by staff and students. Report any incident to the Science HOD immediately
  • Maintain tidiness and cleanliness of laboratories
  • Take care of the plants and animals in the laboratories. Feed and maintain the habitats of the animals in the Science laboratories
  • Conduct technical training for staff as required
  • Liaise with Campus Management team to ensure that the Science laboratories are well-maintained
  • Liaise with Nurse on the validity of items in the first aid kit in the Science laboratories


  1. Administrative support for science teachers
  • Assist teachers in preparing materials and laboratory protocols for science programmes and students’ projects
  • Assist teachers in conducting demonstrations and hands-on activities/experiments
  • Create videos of Science activities/experiments
  • Search for and recommend web-based resources for teaching and learning purposes
  • Collate feedback data from surveys on science activities and School Excellence Model-related surveys for review purposes
  • Accompany students on learning journeys and field trips (when necessary)
  • Update information and displays on the science notice board (when necessary)
  • Prepare the schedule for the Science Practical Assessments and assist teachers in   invigilation
  • Assist teachers in conducting make-up for students who miss the Science Practical Assessments


  1. Logistical and administrative support for school and departmental events/programmes
  • Assist the Science department in the implementation of programmes, e.g. hydroponics programme and student volunteer programme
  • Maintain the hydroponic facilities and take care of the vegetables
  • Maintain the Science planters and take care of the plants
  • Assist in running school events such as Green Day, Family Fest, Summer Programme
  • Assist the Exam Committee in invigilation of students with special considerations
  • Assist in Science examination paper marking sessions
  • Provide logistical support to school and departments as necessary


  • Diploma / Degree holder in the study of Physics, Biology, Chemistry or Science subjects
  • Have work experience in a school environment or laboratory is preferable
  • Fresh graduates will also be considered
  • Be an effective communicator in oral and written English
  • Be a good team player
